What I mean by mindset. See, when you sit down to your mixing process, your mixing session, you know you’re going to spend a lot of time tweaking, compressing, automation, all that kind of stuff.
Well, during the mastering stage, you have to be really decisive. You have to sit down and know, like right, I have half an hour, forty minutes to master the song.
Why I’m talking about the mindset? See, during the mixing stage, you spend hours and hours and hours trying to figure it out what will be the best way to to glue things together and the mixing process but during the mastering stage you don’t really have those options, right?
I hope that was helpful.

10. Metering
As a last in your chain have the metering plugin to monitor the final volume and LUFS level and make sure your song won’t get penalised by Spotify, iTunes etc. You can use the same plugin as in the first step.

05. Mid/Side split
This is a good place to use mid/side plugin where you could boost the presence of either mid signal or side signal. Mid signal boost will give you more power, whilst side boost will open up your master and make it sound bigger.
06. Power compression
Use this stage to add a bit of power to your master. Make sure your threshold doesn’t affect the natural sound too much but at the same time the compressor delivers a nice lift of perceived volume.
07. Clipper
With the clipper you can push your signal to the set sealing (I suggest -0.5dB) to set the stage for the final volume check in the next step.
08. Mid/Side limiter
Get creative with mid/side limiter and split your signal to different bands, push different frequencies to make your master sound bigger.
09. Limiter
Finish off with a stereo limiter where you can set the final volume and dynamics of your master. Make sure your sealing is set to max -0.5dB.
10. Metering
As a last in your chain have the metering plugin to monitor the final volume and LUFS level and make sure your song won’t get penalised by Spotify, iTunes etc. You can use the same plugin as in the first step.

If you want to learn more about mastering or you want to learn the whole process of mastering, I got an online course, where I teach all the stuff that I know about mastering, the processes and the ways to use different plugins, and it’s all based on free plugins so you don’t have to have any of the expensive plug ins.

04. Glue compression
To “glue” everything together you should now use a compressor. Don’t overdo it with the amount. Just enough to “glue” all the previous stages of EQ’ing together. Set a low ratio. You don’t want to get “compressed” sound

01. Spectrum analyser & meter
To make sure you know what’s the starting gain in both dB and LUFS I recommend having metering plugin as a first in the chain. It also helps if the plugin has spectrum analyser so you can see troubling frequencies before you start mastering.

To make sure you know what’s the starting gain in both dB and LUFS I recommend having metering plugin as a first in the chain. It also helps if the plugin has spectrum analyser so you can see troubling frequencies before you start mastering.
02. Corrective EQ
As a second plugin in your chain you should have EQ, where you’ll be able to analyse and fix unwanted frequencies and tackle them eg. high pass filter.
03. Creatve EQ
This is the stage where you can be creative with your EQ’ing after the previous, corrective stage. This is where you can add some “colour” and style to your master.
04. Glue compression
To “glue” everything together you should now use a compressor. Don’t overdo it with the amount. Just enough to “glue” all the previous stages of EQ’ing together. Set a low ratio. You don’t want to get “compressed” sound

If you want to learn more about mastering or you want to learn the whole process of mastering, I got an online course, where I teach all the stuff that I know about mastering, the processes and the ways to use different plugins, and it’s all based on free plugins so you don’t have to have any of the expensive plug ins.

10. Metering
As a last in your chain have the metering plugin to monitor the final volume and LUFS level and make sure your song won’t get penalised by Spotify, iTunes etc. You can use the same plugin as in the first step.

If you want to learn more about mastering or you want to learn the whole process of mastering, I got an online course, where I teach all the stuff that I know about mastering, the processes and the ways to use different plugins, and it’s all based on free plugins so you don’t have to have any of the expensive plug ins.
Thanks,
Tom
